Amazon May Bring an AI-Enabled Smartphone Following Fire Phone’s Exit
According to Reuters, Amazon is developing a new smartphone under ‘Transformer’ project internally. It is a device and services unit-led project that leads to the phrase ‘This’s an individualised mobile phone which sync with Alexa. This is probably a voice assistant that will be the constant contact between Amazon and its users throughout the day.
Jeff Bezos is said to have long envisioned the Transformer project as part of a “ubiquitous voice-driven computing assistant similar to the voice controlled computer in science fiction series Star Trek” (the movie’s original title) that was created by his own name. According to Bezos, a smartphone that was designed specifically for shopping would be like an Apple-based device which could offer fast shipping and discounts through Amazon Prime membership.
It is not clear whether details of the price and launch timeline for the Transformer project are yet to be revealed. It says that the project could still be shelved if the strategy changes or because of financial concerns, it reports.
Amazon’s Transformer project is said to be under a new team at Amazon’s devices division called ZeroOne, which has been described as being the brainchild of an Amazon-based company. The group is headed by former Microsoft executive J Allard, who previously worked on products such as the Zune and the Xbox. This new Amazon phone reportedly is inspired by the inspiration of The Light Phone, which has some basic features.
Amazon’s alleged smartphone will likely focus on personalisation, and could allow users to shop online for Amazon content via Prime Video. The app could also be used to quickly access Prime Music, and order food via Grubhub. It could also have built-in advanced AI capabilities that would eliminate the need for traditional app stores, which require downloading and registering for apps. The device is likely to be largely played by the voice assistant Alexa, who will play an important role in paraphrasing.
In June 2014 Amazon Fire Phone was launched with a price tag of $649 (roughly Rs. A 60,000-year-old ) This model was discontinued by Amazon in September 2015 after struggling to attract market demand for its new model, which had struggled to sell.
