Arc Raiders AI Voice Lines Were Re-Recorded by Human Actors After Launch Says Embark CEO

Embark Studios’ hit extraction shooter Arc Raiders, released in October last year and was criticised for its use of AI-generated voice lines as an example of the film. In months since the game was launched, Embark CEO Patrick Söderlund has said that the studio had recorded some of its AI voices with human performers and acknowledged the “quality difference” between the two players.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Söderlund said Arc Raiders now has fewer AI voice lines than it had at launch.

A few of the lines were re-corded after launch and “made them with real voices,” Söderlund told the magazine in a recent interview.

After Arc Raiders launched their AI-generated voice lines in the game, flak erupted against Embark in weeks after it was released to use artificial intelligence. The studio said some Arc Raiders voice lines used licensed human voices generated through text-to-speech tools. Söderlund argued the AI voice lines were mostly used for the in-game ping system audio, but admitted that “recorded human voices were much better” (as well as other humans) had been recorded.

“There is a quality difference. A real professional actor is better than AI; that’s just how it is,” he said.
