Epic Games Lays Off More Than 1000 Employees CEO Cites Downturn in Fortnite Engagement

Two of the world’s largest tech giants, Apple and Google, were fought long drawn-out legal battle with Epic Games in what was to be one of its biggest tech companies. But the company was fighting to remove Fortnite, its popular multiplayer game that Google’s Play Store and Apple’S App Store had taken away with their in-app purchases policies. Game developer has said it is laying off many staff as its first game, Fortnite, remains recovering from a downturn in engagement that began last year. Similarly, the game is in its ‘early stages’ of returning to smartphones after a US District Court recently ruling in Epic Games’ favour.

Epic Games Fresh Layoffs Come as Company Faces a Few ‘Unique’ and Some ‘Industry-Wide’ Challenges

In a blog post on Tuesday, Epic Games Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Sweeney said the Fortnite developer is hiring over 1,000 employees. The company’s unique challenges and industry-wide challenges were among the reasons Sweeney cited in this decision, which was also given to several factors. Nevertheless, the chief reason for this decline in Fortnite engagement — which began in 2025 — is “the downturn,” said Epic Games CEO. That is’significantly more’ than the company spends, he said.

The new layoffs, as well as the $500 million (about Rs. SR4696 4696. Sweyney added that the game developer is likely to be a more stable position, as Epic Games plans to start contracting, marketing and closing some open roles in 51 crore) of cost savings which they say will put on their agenda. In addition to that, he said the company has been struggling with providing “consistent Fortnite magic” every season”.

Similarly, Sweeney pointed out the industry challenges facing the company is experiencing “slower growth, weaker spending and tougher cost economics”. In addition to this, he says that the consoles of today’s generation are selling for relatively less than they used to be; people have also started moving towards other entertainment.

Sweeney said the layoffs at Epic Games are not “related to AI” and that a new wave of lay offs in tech industry has been fuelled by an unprecedented takeover into AI-powered tools, replacing white-collar employees in corporate offices. In addition to severance pay, the company will offer four months of base salary to laid-off employees. Furthermore, employees from Epic Games who are outgoing will be eligible for extended “Epic-paid healthcare coverage” of six months in the US.

That’s not the first time that Epic Games has declared a huge layoff, but this isn’t the only one to say so much. The Fortnite-maker told a BBC report in 2023 that the company is ‘laying down around 16 percent of its workforce and has cut about 870 jobs’. It was then attempting to stabilize its finances, as it said that it was spending more money than it had earned.
