Fable Gets Gameplay Deep Dive at Developer Direct Launch Set for PC PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in Autumn 2026
Playground Games’ open world action-RPG Fable was viewed for an extended look at Xbox Developer Direct on Thursday as the game’s playground games developer, GameGame Director of Operations and Entertainment, had been shown this week. The first-party Xbox studio released gameplay details and promised a “truly open world” driven by player choice and actions. Fable was also confirmed to launch on PS5 with PC and Xbox Series S/X in autumn 2026 as well.
Fable would be a “new beginning” but faithful to the original trilogy from Lionhead Studios’ Lion Head Games, said Playground Games (the series of popular Forza Horizon series and open world racing games) that played on their title.
The gameplay summary outlined the setting, choice-based gameplay, NPC interaction, character creation and a new morality system in Fable’s game. This will be a reboot for the Fable franchise, but it is not going to lose its “fairytale” essence of the series and this action-RPG will mark an episode with that “action-PRG”. Playground Games emphasized that the game will be full of British humor, just as it was in the older Fable games.

Fable Story and Open World
Players will start the journey in Fable as a child when they grow up at an village called Briar Hill, which is part of another nod to the original trilogy. Here, players will find out what they do for their heroes. Despite the idyllic village life, which collapses when a mysterious stranger turns the whole village and its inhabitants into stone.
It’s that where players start their adventure which will have far reaching implications for Briar Hill and for the larger world of Albion.
Albion is “a wide open world” with rolling hills, magical forests, bustling villages and sweeping views as described by Playground Games. play ground, said Albion will be ‘truly open world’ and players can explore the map in a way that is effortless to do so without being restricted from early in the game.

Besides sleepy hamlets and villages, Albion will also have large cities (mostly the capital city of Bowerstone), where players can visit Fairfax castle and the Heroes’ guild.
Fable will also allow players to select a character template, customise clothing, hair, skin tone, tattoos and other details for making ‘an original hero’. Likewise, the game will allow players to choose play as they want, learn skills and abilities that they like; then utilize the weapons they prefer, blends melee, ranged (and magic combat mechanics), and their preferred weapons.
When the enemy is staggered, players can use light and heavy attack combos to execute finishers in melee combat. spells, or magical abilities (which are called spell-like powers) will allow players to manipulate and damage enemies.

NPCs and Morality System in Fable
In Fable, NPC interactions were also highlighted in Playground Games as well. Players can buy a house or business, get job, become rich, marry NPCs and even have children in the game. The studio said the game has over 1,000 NPCs with different names, daily routines and personalities. They may also hire an NPC to work for you, rent your house out to them or even kick them out on the street.
So as such, each interaction and decision will have an effect on what NPCs think of you. Depending on your actions, in some parts of the world you could be loved or despised. That’s a game of choice, big and small choices that will also be the story-setting piece for the whole thing which is going to affect your reputation.
A release date for Fable was not confirmed by Playground Games, but the action-RPG will be released in PC (through Steam and Xbox app), PS5 & an Xbox Series S/X in autumn 2026. Day one The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
