Google Photos’ Remix Feature Uses AI to Turn Your Photos Into Artistic Styles: How to Use It

In July, Google introduced the new Remix feature for its Photos app. Although the tech giant has now questioned how it works, while it is still not available for devices widely. The Remix feature, according to Google, uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to transform normal selfies, portraits or pet photos into artistic styles like 3D animation, anime, sketch and more. Designed in the Photos app, it is distinct from default photo editor and built into the photos app.

Remix Feature in Google Photos

A blog post in the Photos app explains how Google explained Remix feature in an article about it, which was written by Google for “the newer” people. The photo-to-video feature, powered by Veo 2, was announced alongside it and would be available to Android and iOS users in the US for weeks after. Users can choose a photo from their gallery and select’styles’ to turn the normal photo into an artistic piece for sharing with others on social media.

They can choose from 3D animation, anime, comic book and sketch. According to Google’s Remix, photos reimagined with Google can be shared with others like any other image.

How to Use the Remix Feature

  1. Open the Google Photos app
  2. Tap on Create at the top-right corner of the screen and select Remix
  3. Next, tap on Try now and select an artistic style to apply to an image
  4. Now, select a photo that you wish to edit with the Choose photo option
  5. Tap on Generate to reimagine the photo in the selected artistic style
  6. To save the photo, tap Save. You can also share it with others via the Share option

For example, Google suggests users can tap on the Regenerate option to get different results in the same artistic style. In addition to this, they can also change the chosen photo with Change photo option. Nevertheless, the feature is experimental and may not match original photo.

But the tech giant has urged users to upload a well-lit, focused or front-facing portrait photo of one or dozens more subjects in order to achieve maximum results by posting ‘an accurate and high quality image with an eye on each other.
