Instagram to Discontinue End-to-End Encryption for DMs on May 8: What It Means for You

Earlier in May 2026, Instagram has announced that it will stop support for end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) services. First introduced in 2022, the feature encrypts conversations in direct messages (DMs) so that no one including Meta can read them. But the new announcement means that encrypted chats currently on the platform will no longer support after that date, according to the newly announced change. If users whose conversations are affected will be told how to download any messages or media they want before the feature is removed.

End of E2EE on Instagram

The Instagram statement on its support page said users with chats that are protected by end-to-end encryption will be told in the app about the new change, which begins May 8, 2026, when it is a “starter” to implement this change. In the platform, it recommends users download any messages or media that they want to save before the aforementioned date; encrypted chats will no longer be available after their completion.

Meta also noted that users running older versions of the Instagram app may need to update the application to access the download option for their encrypted chats.

How E2EE on Instagram Works

During end-to-end encrypted chats, each device participating in the conversation generate is according to Meta “[a] an encryption key that protect messages and calls. In the case of a user sending smooch, their device encrypted its message before it is transmitted; only if one has the correct key to decrypt and read that message, then they can be decoded.

Similarly, users can check the security of their conversations by comparing encryption keys with the person they were talking to. Instagram, however, added ‘If someone in the conversation decided to report or share messages that they would then be sent to Meta for moderation purposes. Furthermore, the encryption does not protect chat customisations such as themes and visual settings.

Initially, Meta tested end-to-end encrypted chats (including disappeared messages and encrypted backups on Facebook Messenger in 2022 as part of a larger effort to improve private messaging tools) with the use of encryption. In recent years, Instagram added similar encryption capabilities as optional options for some conversations.

What the Removal of E2EE Means for Users

End-to-end encrypted messaging means that messages on Instagram will no longer enjoy the same privacy protection for users, meaning they won’t be able to use end-of-ending encrypted message. Whenever E2EE is enabled, messages are encrypted to the sender and can only be decrypted on the receiving device when it is activated. This means that third-party services, such as Meta, cannot access the content of messages.

In a case where the feature is discontinued, messages on Instagram will return to their original messaging system in the platform (where messages can be stored or processed according to the service’s policies) when it has been removed.

The feature could reduce the level of confidentiality that was previously a part of the conversations, and may be less important for those who have been using it for private conversations. As such, users should be advised to download important conversations or media before the deadline of May 8 if they want copies of their encrypted messages.

In the future, if encrypted messaging will return in another form (or when it will be replaced by an alternative privacy feature on the platform), Meta has not said whether or not.
