Microsoft Reveals Project Helix Details at GDC Announces Xbox Mode for Windows 11
Microsoft said at Game Developers Conference (GDC) on Wednesday that it will begin to ship alpha variants of Project Helix to developers in 2027, announcing the company’s announcement at Games Developer’s conference (GMC) last week. A father for Xbox, said the parent shared more details about next-generation Xbox features, promising ‘an order of magnitude leap’ in ray-tracing performance.
Speaking at the new edition of GDC, which opened in San Francisco on March 9, Jason Ronald, vice president of Next Generation at Xbox, spoke about next-gen Xbox hardware in a keynote at its latest edition. Ronald remarked that Microsoft was “hard at work” on its next generation first-party console, codenamed Project Helix, which is the next-generation one-year-old.
Microsoft’s newer console, which will play both PC and Xbox games, runs on a custom AMD SoC. Ronald said Project Helix was designed with AMD “for the next generation of DirectX and FSR to unlock what comes next,” he said. Paraphrasingr ’It is.

The executive also promised a major leap in performance, power, capability with Project Helix.
It makes an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability, integrates intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline; it drives meaningful gains in efficiency, scale and visual ambition. This is a more realistic, immersive and dynamic world for players,” Ronald said in his keynote, which was summarised on Xbox Wire.
In 2027, he confirmed Microsoft will begin to send alpha versions of the next-gen Xbox to game developers. In that timeline, Microsoft will launch the console earlier than later amid fears of a delay due to memory and storage shortages and pricing concerns.
Like Xbox Series S/X, Project Helix will also be backwards compatible with all generations of Xbox consoles. Ronald said the company was “committed” to preserving titles from all four generations of Xbox playable for years to come.”
As part of our 25th anniversary later this year, we’re experimenting with new ways to play some of the most iconic games from our history,” Ronald said.
Xbox Mode Coming to Windows 11
The executive of Microsoft also released an update on Xbox on Windows, confirming that the newer Xbox mode — which was introduced as the Xbox full-screen experience on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds — will be available for Windows 11 from April 11.
Users can boot directly into the Xbox app in an upcoming version of the game, which provides more console-like intuitive UI experience than previously available on other platforms. Ronald said the mode will be available on Windows 11 in select markets to start with.
Earlier last week, new Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma officially announced Project Helix. The new Xbox chief, who replaced Phil Spencer last month, said Project Helix would “lead in performance” and play both Xbox and PC games.
Microsoft is yet to confirm its launch plans for the next-gen Xbox; neither Sony has PlayStation 6’s release plan. The tenth generation of home consoles will be released in late 2027, according to reports, but there are concerns about delays due to RAM and storage shortages and price hikes. PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, the ninth generation of consoles released in 2020, are a line-up of PlayStation 5 and an early version of its predecessor, Sony’s successor.
