Mozilla Firefox Will Let You Decide How Much AI You Want in Your Browser
Mozilla Firefox is adding a new feature to allow users more control over the features of artificial intelligence (AI) that they see in the browser. But with the next update, which will be released later this month in Firefox, the company has said it will have a centralised control centre that allows users to choose and select AI features they want on the app and which ones they do not want to see. Furthermore, the settings will also allow users to opt out entirely of generative AI features such as those that the company is coming out with in the future.
Mozilla Firefox Gets a Centralised AI Control Hub
The new AI control centre for its Firefox browser was described in a blog post by Mozilla and announced it had been introduced to the site, which is now under development. A major pain point for users in the age of AI browsers is that no one can control whether they want the AI features or not. In most of the cases, AI features are automatically enabled by default with no option left to the user. In other words, the side-panel chatbot or auto translation feature are visible at all times (even if one user never uses them).
It’s the latest version of this that Mozilla is introducing with the Firefox 148 update for desktop, which will be released on February 24. This will allow users to see a centralised AI control hub, which allows users for selecting and choosing the features of AI they want on the app; as well as the ones they wish disabled. Users can also choose to block all generative AI features, even though they prefer the traditional experience. But if you choose that option, it will automatically disable any future AI releases and also “any future” AI,” Mozilla said.
The control centre initially allows users to either enable or block five main features of . Such such as Translations, Alt text in PDFs and AI-enhanced tab grouping, Link previews (and an AI chatbot) in the sidebar are examples of these. The browser’s assistant is the latter and allows users to choose from Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot (a chatbot that uses Gemini) and Mistral’S Le Chat as their preferred chat bot.
When people use AI as part of their browser experience, we believe choice is much more important than ever. It said the company, ‘What we care about is giving people control, no matter what they think of AI.
