OpenAI and Jony Ive’s Under-Development AI Device Is Reportedly Not a Wearable
The once whispered-about, revolutionary wearable is now a very different story of the Altman-Ive collaboration. No on-wrist AI creation; court documents stumbled upon during a trademark fiasco that caused a tempestuous reclassing of the term “io” hint that the object of their creation is far more mysterious. The secrets are not spilling any time soon, until 2026 at least, but one thing is sure: what Altman and Ive are concocting does not go on a body. The tech world stands in breath, speculating the form and function of this puzzling AI device.
Altman and Ive Reportedly Not Working on a Wearable
The collaboration of OpenAI and Ive has hit the first snag faster than you can even say ‘trademark infringement.’ Over a weekend, OpenAI removed all traces of the name “io” from its site, including the announcement video. The reason for that was because X (previously Twitter) saw OpenAI Newsroom post-a trademark complaint from iyO-causing the venture to take a sudden step back from the center spotlight.
From Google’s famous Moonshot Factory comes iyO, the AI startup fighting for personalized audio. TechCrunch informs that iyO is developing these fantastic AI-powered in-ear devices that seamlessly blend into your digital life. Meanwhile, something interesting that comes up is that io is supposedly going down a similar path.
Topping everything else, iyO’s filings also uncover a meeting between their representatives and executives from OpenAI and io, where iyO exhibited a demo for their in-ear tech. OpenAI has, however, denied various aspects of the complaint: “We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options,” but the joining of forces of the AI powerhouses around in-ear technology asks many questions regarding the future of personalized AI experiences.
From whispers to accusations: OpenAI and io bought 30-plus headphones, giving rise to rumors of secret audio devices. Both companies denied the hearsay. Then comes the bombardment of documents filed by Tang Tan, io’s co-founder and hardware whiz (once with Apple), bearing a funny twist. The real mystery device simply isn’t headphones. The audio world braces for the great unknown.
Forget earbuds and smartwatches-the AI gadget Sam Altman alleged? According to Tang, that’s not it. So put the purchase on hold for the time being. It’s still a minimum one-year wait. Altman himself gave a sort of clue as to what it isnot-something you put on your body. The intrigue only amplifies…
He foresaw it becoming the next key desk partner and famously added that it “is going to be a third core device” on everyone’s workspace, along with the MacBook Pro and iPhone.
