OpenAI Is Reportedly Developing a Code Hosting Platform to Take on Microsoft’s GitHub

The company OpenAI is said to be working on a similar project for an alternative like Microsoft’s GitHub. The San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) giant is in the early stages of building the code hosting platform, according to the report. The product is reportedly made by the company after several disruptions on GitHub due to platform-based outages. As it’s a project in early stages, it is unclear how the company would be onboarding developers for making companies use of the repository hosting platform.

OpenAI Reportedly Developing GitHub Rival

AchatGPT developer “has started working on a internal replacement for Microsoft’s GitHub” according to The Information. The publication, citing an anonymous person who was familiar with the subject, said it took the decision to create a code hosting platform after OpenAI engineers faced increasing service disruptions due to outages on GitHub in recent months. The disruptions reportedly affected the AI company’s number of project pipelines, which are said to have been driven by these disruption.

The OpenAI is said to be in its early stages and will likely not be completed within the next few months, with a project known as an Open AI. Yet it has been said that those who are working on the project have discussed putting up with the repository to the company’s customer base for a fee. No other details were provided by the publication.

There have been several disruptions to GitHub over the last few months that led to degraded services on the platform. In a December 2025 blog post by the code hosting platform, there were 5 incidents that destroyed several critical services for over six hours combined.

But this highlights that the frustrations of engineers at OpenAI are not a reason for their frustration. But a goal that remains ambitious is building an alternative platform to respond to its response, though it’s still far from being the first one. GitHub, amongst the most popular repository hosting services for developers, is integrated with several tools and AI-driven features that help coders. Furthermore, it also offers a platform that provides an extensive integration with many tools and products; this allows for enterprises and independent developers to upload codebases and pull requests.
