PS6 Could Be Delayed Beyond 2028 as Sony Plans to Extend PS5 Life Cycle Analyst Claims
The PlayStation 6 could have been delayed beyond 2028 as Sony is said to be looking for a longer life cycle for the PS5. That would mean that the PS5 would have been at least eight years before PlayStation’s next generation consoles were released. Since the PS3 was a seven-year anniversary, Sony has usually released another-gen console every single year.
MST Financial analyst David Gibson has argued that Sony could delay the PS6. The Japanese-focused report on the gaming industry published earlier this month, Gibson shared some details of Sony’s upcoming quarterly financial results and PlayStation life cycle in his Japan-focussed report.
Sony is considering extending the PS5’s life cycle, and PS6’s release will likely be later than expected, Gibson noted.
“There’s a high likelihood that the PS6 launch will occur after 2028,” the analyst said in the report. (via IGN).
PS5 Life Cycle Likely to be Extended
PS5’s life cycle would be extended by at least one year more if PS6 is launched in 2029, which means that PS5, for example, will have an additional year of PlayStation5. PS5 was released in November 2020 and is soon to be six years old, with a release date of PS5. Sony released a new-generation home console every seven years since the PS3 was launched in November 2006; the PlayStation4 is an MP4, and the P5 is based on its November 2020 release.
The PS6 has been widely rumoured to launch in late 2027, depending on the company’s traditional release cadence and some leaks. But other market factors such as increasing memory and GPU prices have led many industry insiders to believe that the next generation of console’s release could be pushed back.
He wrote that Gibson also stated in his report that Sony Q3 FY 2025 earnings were expected to exceed market expectations, with sales of first and third-party games driving growth. The company’s third-quarter sales and operating profit are likely to be JPY 1 with the company’s expected revenue of 3py 1. A total of 8 trillion (and JPY 160 billion) are derived from , respectively. The performance in the third quarter is believed to have been supported by aggressive sales of Sony’s and third-party game software, Gibson said.
Sony will host its FY2025 Q3 earnings call on February 5, 2026.
PS6 and Next-Gen Xbox
But this isn’t the first time that claims of the PS6 being delayed have been made. An Insider Gaming reported in December that both Sony and Microsoft were considering delaying the PS6 and the next-gen Xbox amid ongoing RAM price hikes and shortage.
A rapid expansion of AI data centres has left the consumer hardware market facing a severe shortage of RAM globally, leading to skyrocketing demand for memory. Consequently, RAM prices have increased manyfold amongst the decreasing supplies of .
PS6, next-gen Xbox launches in 2027, and earlier leaks had placed a post on previous leakers of the PlayStation6. The leaker, KeplerL2, a reliable leakator, had said in October that Sony was planning to launch the PS6 in 2027 “unless any unexpected delays occur”.
In contrast, Moore’s Law is Dead, a YouTube channel that has been noted for leaking gaming hardware news, had said the next Xbox was “targeting – which is thought to be based on pc/console hybrid” and was ‘targeted if it launched in 2027”.
Neither Sony nor Microsoft have confirmed their plans for their respective next-generation consoles.
