Sony Reportedly Develops New Tech That Can Trace Original Music in AI Songs
Sony Group has reportedly developed a new technology that can identify original music from songs generated by artificial intelligence (AI)-generated tracks. Designed to detect copyrighted material embedded in AI-made tracks, the system is designed to allow holders of rights to know whether their work has been used without permission. There have been several ongoing lawsuits against AI music startups and a lack of transparency over the data used in the underlying models’ ethical output of songs generated by artificial intelligence, which Sony claims to be looking to address with its music detection technology.
Sony Group Reportedly Develops Music Detection Tech
A Nikkei Asia report claims Sony Group has developed a new technology that can spot and identify the original music inspired an AI-generated song. Music generation models are based on songs and samples of music because since the model is designed to train using so much data, they can only be trained on song and sample of musical instruments.
Sony’s new tool reportedly finds the original music that was originally used as the basis for the final output. Besides that it is said to be capable of finding more than one song in a track without any problems. It also reportedly mentions how much of the music is used to create an AI song. The report drew no technical details or the fundamental workings of technology.
The technology operates in two ways, . Sony’s system connects directly with the base model of their AI developers and analyse training data to determine which copyrighted works were used when they cooperate with them. However, if developers do not cooperate, the system compares AI-generated output with existing music catalogues to estimate the sources.
The development was under the direction of Sony AI, Sony Group’s research and development arm. One of the academic papers describing the approach has been reported to have accepted at an international conference, suggesting that it is undergone peer review. The company claims it would like the technology to be ‘integrated into AI models by developers or used by content owners during license negotiations’.
Sony has reportedly seen it as an instrument to develop fairer systems for distribution of revenue from AI music back to original songwriters, although no specific timeline for commercial rollout has been released.
