Ramblings of a forgotten PlayStation Showcase? Maybe Sony is indeed holding onto its power this year in favor of a State of Play. Insiders hinted at internal discord as to whether they should opt for a full summer showcase or a shorter presentation. Industry whistleblower Jeff Grubb poured salt onto the wound in February, supporting the idea that Sony was wrangling with such a decision.
The rumor mill churned last month, as Jeff Grubb indicated there might be some sort of PlayStation event in June. However, keep those expectations in check. Put simply, nothing along the lines of a blockbuster PlayStation Showcase is coming your way. Rather, all indications forefront an event called State of Play-a concise quarterly broadcast heavy on third-party revelations and a handful of smaller first-party updates. Lots of quick announcements, not so many earth-shattering debuts. The Showcase, on the other hand, has to be separate, grander, yearly production where Sony goes into the details of its first-party world.
Sony fans endured the drought in the PlayStation Showcase of 2024 after being treated in 2023. State of Play confirmations suggest that perhaps the drought shall carry on through this year. But hold onto your controller! Rumblings hint at a great Showcase revival potentially in 2025.
What to Expect from State of Play
State of Play announcements: a siren song of hope, followed by…. Dead silence. Anticipation runs very high with each broadcast, yet these Sony first-party reveals have been very safe recently. Remember the showdown between Ghost of Yotei’s samurai and Saros’ cosmic horror? Solid, sure, but hardly earth-shattering. The question then remains: Where are updates from Sony’s heavyweight studios? Some have been shrouded in secrecy, in my opinion, for ages, leaving fans desperate to hear a peep behind the curtain.
Much like the Wolverine, Insomniac’s Wolverine was its very own enigma until 2021: the silence surrounding it is deafening. Santa Monica Studio itself has also been in the midst of whirlwinds and gossip about a possible God of-War spinoff tucked away in the blood-soaked sands of Ancient Greece. Could the upcoming State of Play broadcast finally put an end to the silence and unleash these titans?
But hype is just around the corner! Prepare for glimpses of the further development of previously revealed titles: Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, the mysterious Saros, and wondrous visuals of Phantom Blade Zero, to the re-emergence of legends, Marathon. Time to drown the further hunger for the already craved games!
