Valve Says Steam Deck OLED Is Out of Stock Due to RAM and Storage Shortages

The current AI-driven memory and storage crisis has severely affected PC and gaming hardware availability and prices. Vague has admitted now that RAM and memory shortages have affected Steam Deck OLED stock in the US. In the US, all Steam Deck models are sold out now as Valve stopped supplying LCD models in December.

All three Steam Deck Models the 256GB LCD, 512GB OLED and 1TB O LED – were out of stock last week on the official Steam deck store page in the US. Now, Valve has confirmed that the ongoing chip crisis has affected availability of its popular handheld.

In some areas, Valve wrote in a note on the US Steam Deck store page (via @Wario64) that “some regions are out-of-stock intermittently due to memory and storage shortages.” During the time that Steam Deck OLED models would be back in stock, Valve did not specify when they would return to stock.

Steam Machine Delay

In a statement last month, Valve also confirmed that the memory and storage shortages could lead to delay in launch of the Steam Machine earlier this month. While the PC/console hybrid was slated to launch in “early 2026” (although it is now readjusted to “first half of the year”).

In its announcement, Valve said that it was planning on releasing Steam Machine’s pricing and launch date by this time, but the increasing hardware prices made it “revisit” those details. However, the company has struggled to decide how much the Steam Machine will cost. It will cost the device like a PC with the ‘same level of performance’, Valve has previously said.

During December, Valve announced that it had stopped producing its most affordable Steam Deck model, the 256GB Steamdeck LCD. Upon its sale, the LCD model (which is available at $399 in the US) will no longer be available. Now, the 512GB and 1TB Steam Deck OLED models are available for purchase at $549 and $649 (along with memory shortage), as well as their availability.

RAM, Memory Shortages

Considering prices for RAM and SSD are high, gaming hardware has been hit by memory and storage shortages that have led to the game’reputation of Memory and Storage. Sony and Microsoft may also be expected to delay their next-generation consoles as the chip crisis continues to entail, according to both Sony’s and MS. In a Bloomberg report Monday, Sony was considering delaying the PS6 to 2028 or even 2029. In the same report, Nintendo also said it could increase the price of the Switch 2 in 2026.

A growing AI data centre, which requires large amounts of high performance memory (as well as a global market for RAM and SSD storage), is also facing serious shortages in consumer hardware markets. With dwindling stocks, the price of memory and storage has rocketed.

GPU prices have also increased significantly in recent months amid a shortage of supplies. Sony and Microsoft lowered the price of their current-generation consoles, the PS5 and the Xbox Series S/X, last year as well as both Sony (and Microsoft) raised prices for each. In 2027, it was initially thought that the PS6 and the next-gen Xbox were targeting launch targets but could now be delayed after 2028.
